Changzhou Museum In Profile
    Changzhou Museum, founded in 1958, is a provincial comprehensive museum being a combination of collection, research, exhibition display (including the unique Children's Natural Museum in the whole province). The museum has eight departments, namely the Office of the Department of Archaeology, the Department of Custody, the Department of Display, the Department of Opening, the Department of Nature, the Department of Information and the Security Department. The collection of cultural relics are more than 20,000 pieces, among which there are 27 pieces of national first grade cultural relics (a national treasure), 166 pieces of the second-class historical relics, 3129 pieces of the third-class historical relics, the national first and second grade animals and plants, and 103 pieces of fossil specimens. Among these treasures, the jade in the Liangzhu culture period, the original celadon porcelain in the Spring and Autumn and Warring period, the lacquer and porcelain in the Song and Yuan dynasty as well as paintings and calligraphy in the Ming and Qing Dynasties are full of characteristics of collection antiques in Changzhou Museum.
    Over the years, by the extensive support from the various circles of society and the great effort of several generations in the Museum, our Museum has been conferred honorary titles such as "Patriotic Education Bases in Jiangsu Province", "National Advanced Group for Security of Cultural Relics" and "Excellent Museum of Jiangsu Province."
    In the past 50 years, three simple houses of the historical relics were from Hongmei pavilion to the Tianning Temple, then to Qingliang Temple, where the conditions were so simple and crude that could not meet to display, collections, and research, of the Collection. Therefore, it has been listed as one of the major projects to build a modern Changzhou Museum in the development of modern service industry by Municipal Party Committee and municipal government.
    The new Changzhou Museum had been completed in December of 2006 and it was officially open to the public on April 28 of 2007. The new museum is located in the west side of the public square, with the construction area of 20,000 square meters, the novel appearance, full equipment, advanced functionality, and the characteristics of the ages. The overall construction is divided into five levels: four storeies above the ground, and one storey underground. The first and third storeies are for display and the exhibition and the four-storey and basement are the area of storehouses and the offices. The show area of the new museum is nearly 10,000 square meters. The main displays and exhibitions are as follows: The exquisite articles of Changzhou relics as the features for Changzhou history and culture display, which is the manifestation of the local cultural details; natural display is the feature exhibition of the province's comprehensive museum; the Art Museum of Xie Zhiliu¡¯s displays Xie Zhiliu¡¯s artistic career and artistic achievements; the display of Mahogany furniture contributed by Liu Guojun are the whole set of rare and precious mahogany furniture. At the same time it accepts temporary exhibition in terms of the different types and materials.
