Mr. Xie Zhiliu is currently a famous maestro of paintings and calligraphy, and connoisseur of ancient paintings, being the successive professor in the Art Department of Central University and the director of association of Chinese artists as well as the vice chairman of association of Shanghai artists. Meanwhile he is also the director of the association of Chinese calligrapher and the chairman of the association of Shanghai calligrapher, serving for the Shanghai museum as a consultant and for the management committee of cultural relics in Shanghai as a vice director and consultant etc., He has been climbing the artistic peak in his more than 50 years of artistic career, being tireless, precisely studying and carefully search, widely inquiring and pressing on. Especially he has the excellent achievements in the fields such as the poetry, books, paintings, the textural study, the identification and research etc., being one of the currently significant artists.
    Mr.Xie Zhiliu was born in a literary family in Wujin of Changzhou in 1910, named Zhi, with courtesy name of Zhi Liu, and named Zhuang Muweng in his later years, died in 1997. He had talented mind, given the fine family education from infancy, learning from the famous teacher, studying the classics and histories and the prose and poems, idolized in paintings, keen to observe the ancient pictures, combining the ancient methods and with his own styles and features. In the respect of painting, such as the birds and flowers, landscapes and characters, it is elegant and solemn, showing a greatly implicit beauty and it is bright and elegant in terms of colors, pretty in terms of skill. Especially he created "the method of setting ink" in his later years, using brushes with ease, making the ink and the colour blending and with unique style. In the respect of calligraphy, it is fresh and elegant, with wonderful character, ease and natural poise and elegant bearing and magnificent vigor. In the respect of poetry, it is with profound accomplishments, the poetry and painting blend, beautiful stylistic mode, refreshing and available to read by everyone .In the respect of academic research, it is with rigorous scholarship, wide-ranging, involving identification of ancient Chinese paintings and calligraphy, art history studies, works Appreciation, finishing and editing historical data etc., especially in the respect of identification of calligraphy and painting, he had a more outstanding contribution.
    Mr. Xie Zhiliu loved his hometown, Changzhou, very much, and donated works including his own paintings and calligraphy and his collection of Qian mingshan’s works for several times to Changzhou. Our city established Xie zhiliu’s art show house in this museum in 1992. Now, we set a special exhibition to display the difficult road Mr. Xie experienced and the artistic achievements he acquired in the new museum to recall the country squire and inspire the youth, encourage our colleagues to win glories for hometown.

    "The picture of bamboo and rock drawn by the brush pen"
The painting --"The picture of bamboo and rock drew by the brush pen”-is Mr. Xie Zhiliu’s mature work in his later years.，combining the poetry, paintings, calligraphy and the stamp ingeniously. In the good frame, the unique calligraphy was used to write the inscription and sentences, combined with the seal, in the way of interpenetration or prevention, connecting the whole picture wonderfully so that making it organically melted. There is a mark--“Yuehao” on the left upper side of the painting and a poetry describing the bamboo, as follows: " Wanting to shake the branches to make the dust down, the green bamboo is in the clouds, do not let the itinerant men touch the bamboo, they will use the bamboo as a fishing rod.” Afterward there are the sentence -- "When Zhuang muweng, Zhi Liu wrote the sentence, he was 80 years old." and the stamp-- "Xie Zhiliu". On the left side, there is a red-character stamp-- "I have been 80 years old," From the whole work, it looks very harmonious, as well as, he combined the deliberate concept with his brushwork techniques used in the picture of the bamboo and the rock, so that the bamboo is vivid, with the composition of spirits and forms, and the rock is majestic and vigorous. That the whole work uses the unique art of composition is refreshing and greatly increases the formal beauty of the work, with 95 × 44 cm in length.
    "Xie Zhiliu’s seven-character four-line poetry with running and cursive calligraphy "
    Mr. Xie Zhiliu became a contemporary notable because of his ability in the identification of ancient paintings and the fame for his drawing achievements, and for him, the calligraphy is minor. However, in the respect of his calligraphy, particularly, his running, cursive calligraphy not only is famous in Shanghai and to be the leadership of penmanship in Shanghai, also standed in the penmanship, attracting the people's attention in the field of calligraphy and integrating with his painting and identification achievements.
    "Seven-character four-line poetry with running and cursive calligraphy" is 88 cm in length and 47 cm in width. The content is created by himself, as follows:” The majestic gateway to the three Gorges is standing above the water surface, the fascinating Goddess peak is floating in the fog, from Ba Gorge to Wu Gorge, the scenery can be appreciated in a half month”. The structure of penmanship is extended and easeful with the certain centripetal force, so that its periphery seems more extended in vision. There contains the square in the circle and curves in the curves, strengthens the modeling ability of Chinese characters. Especially in the respect of mastery to the lines of calligraphy, it is extremely smooth, with the influential spiritual bearing, full of toughness, making factors ,like the rigid and the flexible, curve and the straight, the square and the round, the dry and the wet, the virtual and the real, are intertwined and exhaustively change. The whole works is casual and elegant, magnificent and mellow.
